- Abstract
- In this work, we studied Ti1−xAlxN coatings obtained by electro arc evaporation of two single-component Ti and Al and two composite TiAl (50 at. % Ti and 50 at. % Al) cathodes. The effect of the elemental composition and method of cathode manufacturing on the microstructure, the number, and defectiveness of microdroplets, and the Ti1−xAlxN coating itself has been studied. The dependence of the physical and mechanical, tribological and adhesive properties of Ti1−xAlxN coatings on their structural characteristics, as well as the number and defectiveness of microdroplets, has been revealed. The Ti1−xAlxN coating, formed by the evaporation of two single-component cast cathodes Ti and Al, possesses a complex of high physical and mechanical, tribological, and adhesion properties. A large number and defectiveness of microdroplets on the surface and in the body of the Ti1−xAlxN coating obtained by evaporation of two composite cathodes significantly increases the roughness of the coating and worsens its tribological and adhesion properties. Due to the insignificant difference in the elemental composition of the coatings, their physical and mechanical properties differ insignificantly. The fabrication of composite cathodes by melting the synthesized powders of the TiAl intermetallic compound with a weight ratio of 50% Ti and 50 % Al followed by casting into molds is recommended to improve the tribological and adhesion properties of Ti1−xAlxN coatings.
