- Abstract
- This article investigates the phase-correlation method for contact-less optical registration of micro-vibrations from high-frame-rate video. The theoretical background namely the Fourier shift theorem and the construction of a normalized cross-spectrum is presented together with a practical algorithm that includes image pre-processing, fast Fourier transform (FFT) calculation and peak detection in the correlation domain. Typical applications are discussed: video-frame alignment, temporal-shift estimation for vibration-signal extraction, and the so-called visual microphone. Advantages (robustness to noise and illumination changes, FFT efficiency) and limitations (restricted accuracy without sub-pixel refinement, reduced performance for non-uniform motion) are analysed, demonstrating that phase correlation is a simple yet effective tool for video-based micro-vibration monitoring.
