- Abstract
- This article examines the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions, in particular nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), at urban wastewater treatment plants, methods for their assessment, the impact of various technological solutions on these emissions, as well as strategies to reduce them. Special attention is paid to the analysis of modern research and practical examples demonstrating how the carbon footprint of wastewater treatment plants can be minimized. It has been found that increasing the efficiency of nitrogen removal helps to reduce direct N2O emissions, reduce energy consumption for aeration, and improve the overall efficiency of wastewater treatment.
